Effective Management Strategies and Referral for Suicide and Self-Harm in Primary Care Patients
A review of healthcare patterns in primary care shows: 1) primary care patients often do not want to seek care in mental health settings, and 2) the primary care provider is often the last contact prior to a completed suicide. Knowing how to assess for risk, refer to appropriate care, and manage patients' suicidal ideation or self-harm behaviors is an integral part of providing good care. Participants will learn basic facts vs. myths about suicide, obtain practical tools to use with their patients, know how the medical and mental health systems interact, and learn how to effectively interact with their patients having suicidal or self-harm ideation.
