Reducing and Managing Suicidality in Your Clients

Medical and behavioral care providers often have clients who are vulnerable to suicide. It is critical, then, for you to know how to effectively address suicidal behaviors. Learning how to assess for risk, refer to appropriate care, and manage clients' suicidal ideation are integral to you providing effective care. You will learn basic facts and myths about suicide, obtain practical tools to use with your clients, practice appropriate clinical interventions, understand how the various treatment systems interact, and learn how to effectively interact with your suicidal clients.

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Learn how to structure and prepare one's practice to address suicidal behavior

      * Effectively evaluate suicide risk factors--including depression, psychosis, and substance abuse

      * Distinguish the appropriate sources to refer clients (eg, psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, emergency room, crisis clinic, mental health centers)

      * Know when and with whom to consult

      * Write appropriate and clearn documentation

  • Know how to address suicidal behavior in your clients when it occurs

      * Learn how to conduct an effective and efficient suicide evaluation and crisis intervention in 20-30 minutes

      * Understand key drivers that trigger suicide

      * Use empirically supported crisis intervention strategies

      * Find support and resources in the community for clients, their families, and yourselves

  • Learn therapeutic strategies to reduce suicidality
  • Learn how to decide when to hospitalize a client
  • Learn how to manage chronically suicidal clients
